GA-03: Small Arcade Games
-------------------------
7034/0088 Arcade Games #1 Small Programs Disk
-------------------------
3-Demon
Price, John D. & Richardson, Rick
$10
is a PacMan game from the perspective of PacMan for a really interesting twist
on an old game, or switch to an overhead view.
Chopper Commando 2.0 (CHOPPER)
Currie, Mark & Schindlbeck, T.J.
$?
Fly a helicopter combat mission, bombing and shooting the enemy. There are
three levels of play, and all of them are tough, even the "wimp" level.
CPokeman
is similar to PacMan. It is not as slick, but it works well and does not
require graphics. Slow-down required. Uses ASCII characters.
Flightmare (FLIGHT)
is a two-part arcade game. You are in a jet. First you fight other jets,
then you switch screens and must battle ground forces on motorcycles. Very
good graphics.
Hopper
is like Frogger.
Invaders
is like Space Invaders.
Janitor Joe (JUMPJOE)
Bales, Kevin
$0
is stranded in a space station with crazed robots trying to kill him. You have
to find his keys and escape. This is a very well done "jumping and ladder" type
of game.
Pango
You attempt to clear bees in the field within one minute by squashing them
with blocks.
Qubert
Piazza, Bill
$?
The object is to make "Bert" jump from one tile to another causing tiles to
change color. After changing all tiles, you move on to the next level.
Troff
Soumarokov, N.
$10
is a game that combines the old "Snake" type game with the old "Blockade/Tron"
type game to come up with a tough new challenge. You must race the computer's
snake to get to the randomly appearing "pellets", and at the same time try to
make the computer's snake run into your snake, a wall or itself while avoiding
having the computer's snake do the same to you. There are four levels of
randomly moving walls. Pascal source code is included. Requires a 286 machine,
EGA and DOS 3.3+. The game is well designed, challenging and fun to play. (The
author is a 17 year-old Soviet citizen living in Vienna, Austria.)

Arctic Adventure vol.1 2.0 (ARCTIC)
Micro F/X Software
$10
is another installment in the exciting Nevada Smith adventure series. You
start on the arctic map and must find your way around the hazardous ice caves,
searching for the remaining fragments of a map that will eventually lead you
to the location of the hidden treasure cave. Nevada will face freezing waters,
diabolical traps, slippery ice patches, falling stalactites, runaway
snowballs, and even the Abominable Snowman. This is addictive arcade action at
it's best - great graphics, but only CGA-compatible video required. (Even
monographics systems can run it with CGA emulation software from PsL on disk
#860.)
Brick
Bly, Vincent
$?
is an arcade game in 16 color graphics and can be used with any monitor.
BumpMaze 1.5 (BUMPMAZ)
Soleau, William
$15
We were not sure about adding this game. On the one hand, it seems like it
might be too difficult and uncontrollable to be any fun. On the other hand,
maybe it just requires more hours of practice to be fun than we had available
for testing it. Here is the concept: imagine a pool game in which you lay a
dozen bricks or two-by-four's around the table that has only one hole, one
object ball, and the cue ball. The object is to use the cue ball to push or
guide the object ball into the hole. Both of the balls are constantly and
rapidly moving around, bouncing off the walls, bricks and each other in all
directions. To give you an idea of the difficult, you are allowed eight
minutes(!) to get the ball in the hole. (The opening screen seems to say to
use the cursor keys to move the Pusher, but it is really saying to use the
cursor keys to view the rest of the on-line documentation, which in turn tells
you which keys to use to play the game.)
Dragon (DRAGNFW)
Willshaw, F. A.
$?
is a game like Breakout, but with a lot of twists.
Killer
is an arcade game in which you wipe out the killer bees. (Note: when you
end the game, it aborts with a "file not found" error. We don't know what file
it is looking for, but it doesn't affect the play of the game.)
Kong
is similar to the arcade game Donkey Kong. The graphics are a little on
the crude side, but we still found the game to be challenging. Speed and
sound are user adjustable.
MetaPin
is a pinball game. You select change the number of players with the right
shift key. Start the game by pressing the left shift key. Adjust the starting
shot force with the up and down cursor keys. Control the flippers with the
left and right shift keys. Slow-down required (see notes, above).
Proton
Fencik, Mike
$0
is patterned after the life size game in which two teams sneak around a room
and try to zap each other with phasers.

-------------------------
Batalia
is a two-player game. You and your opponent each have a space ship and the
object is to be the first to shoot the other a total of ten times. Barriers,
etc, are placed on the screen for you to hide behind and maneuver around. The
screen changes after each hit.
Creeps 2.1
Applegate, Bob
$10
is an MS-DOS version of an arcade game that dates back to the old Apple and
Radio Shack Model I computers. The idea is that your ship (or whatever) has
to navigate around a grid of blocks in which the enemy is also moving around
in force. The levels we tried were not extremely challenging (the enemy never
shoots back, for example). So it is simply a matter of time before you mop up
the enemy forces.
Nitefire (NITEFIR)
is a two-player tank game. You take turns moving or shooting. Before
shooting, you can adjust the angle and velocity. The first one to hit the
other wins.
PopCorn
Lacaze, M.
$0
is a fantastic breakout game with all kinds of special effects. There are two
problems: the documentation is in French, and the game plays at a speed about
ten times that of the surrounding graphics. It is possible to change the speed
of the game by entering "POPSPEED n" (where "n" is some number from 0 to
30000) at the DOS prompt before entering POPCORN, but if you make the number
high enough to slow down the play of the game to a reasonable rate, the
surrounding graphics (such as the start-up screen) become excruciatingly slow.
If you put in a lower number to speed up the surrounding graphics, the speed
of play is impossibly fast. We partially resolved this by starting the program
and turning off the Turbo mode on our computer when ready to play, but if
someone can figure out a better solution, please let us know.
Here are some things we were able to figure out: to use a mouse, press
F3 at the main screen (you must load your mouse driver before running the
program); to use the keyboard, press F4; to assign keys, press F5 and then
press a key for left movement, right movement, and a "fire" key. Press F1 to
play.
Tank
is a two-player tank game, or you can play the computer. Unlike NiteFire,
you don't take turns. Firing, adjustment of angle and velocity, shields,
movement, all take place constantly by both sides. Slow-down required (see
notes, above).
Trap 2.0 [10/93 CD]
Brandt, Bruce
$5
is an unusual and interesting game in which you try to move doors to trap the
"monsters" in the least amount of time.
Turbo (TURBODR)
Ross, Doug
$5
is a race car game. The goal is to get as far as possible while crashing as
few times as possible. You will be slowed down by trucks and pokey cars, just
like in real life, but when you pass them, you have to watch out for the
speedin
